From the snow peaks and lakes of the northwest to the rainforests of the south — eight classic coordinates. Location, highlights, best season and how long to stay, all in one place.
Eight Classic Coordinates
Listed geographically from Northwest Yunnan to the south — every one of them can be combined into a custom itinerary.
Old Town, Lijiang City · UNESCO World Heritage
A thousand-year-old town of the Naxi people, where three waterways threading through the town and flagstone lanes paint a picture of “small bridges, flowing water and homes”. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997; the Mu Mansion, Sifang Street and the Great Waterwheel are its iconic stops.
Yulong Naxi Autonomous County, Lijiang · National 5A Scenic Area
The sacred mountain of the Naxi people, its thirteen snow peaks stretching like a soaring dragon. The main cable car climbs to Glacier Park at 4,506 m, while Blue Moon Valley below shimmers like jade.
Dali City, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture · Cangshan–Erhai National Scenic Area
A highland lake embraced by the nineteen peaks of Cangshan — the “moon” in the Bai people’s “wind, flower, snow and moon”. Cycling and photo tours around the lake are the favorite way to go; Xizhou, Shuanglang and Haixin Pavilion each offer their own view.
Dêqên County, Diqing Prefecture · Foremost of Tibet’s eight sacred mountains
Kawagebo, its main peak, remains unclimbed and is revered above all. The “golden sunrise” is best seen from October to May, with Feilai Temple the classic viewpoint — one dawn here is a memory for a lifetime.
Between Ninglang County, Lijiang and Yanyuan County, Sichuan
A highland lake with water so clear you can see to the bottom, home to the Mosuo people, who keep their matrilineal families and “walking marriage” customs. Gliding across the still water in a pig-trough boat at dawn is the best way to meet this hidden land.
Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture · Highland Tibetan frontier
The Shangri-La of Lost Horizon. Songzanlin Monastery is known as the “Little Potala Palace”, Pudacuo National Park holds highland lakes, pastures and virgin forest beautiful in every season, and Dukezong Old Town’s prayer wheel turns with the region’s wishes.
Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture · Rainforest & Dai culture
One of China’s rare tropical rainforests. At Wangtianshu you can walk a 36–metre–high canopy corridor, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Botanical Garden gathers over ten thousand plant species, and the Dai Garden plus Gaozhuang Night Market deliver the region’s signature water–splashing fun and nightlife.
Yuanyang County, Honghe Hani & Yi Autonomous Prefecture · UNESCO World Heritage
A sculpture carved over 1,300 years by the Hani people, whose irrigation system is listed as a World Heritage Irrigation Structure. During the flooded season from December to March the terraces turn into ten thousand mirrors — most breathtaking at sunrise and sunset.
